I was shocked to discover that recent studies have seemed to suggest that genes account for 50% of how confident we are in adulthood (Steve Suomi of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)). However this isn’t to say that we can’t cultivate more confidence and nurture ourselves to promote a healthy level of internal confidence – if anything this finding means that actively fostering more confidence is even more important.
Do you believe that confidence is primarily nature or nurture or even a combination of both, as Steve Suomi seems to suggest? How has your confidence risen or fallen throughout the course of your life and what do you attribute this to? Do you think you can actively foster more confidence? Please share your thoughts in the comments below to gain encouragement, support and insight from our community, we’d love to hear from you.
Following using psychology to transform my life, I founded Accessible Psychology to help empower others to live the life they long for. My journey is living testimony that no matter where you are, absolutely everyone can apply psychology in order to lead more fulfilling lives.
